Individuals on Medicare are eligible for prescription drug coverage under a Part D plan if they are signed up for Medicare Part A and B benefits.
You can choose between different plans offered by private insurance companies. These include a standalone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) that solely covers drug costs or a public Part C health plan that combines Part A and Part B benefits with additional features. Most people are enrolled directly in Part D or receive Part D-like benefits through a public Part C Medicare Advantage health plan.
Some people choose to receive prescription drug coverage under plans offered by former employers.
What is Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part D is Medicare’s Prescription Drug Coverage. Original Medicare alone doesn’t cover prescription medications, but almost everyone needs them, so you can save with a prescription drug plan.
There are often different ways to get Part D. You can get drug coverage through our Medicare Advantage Plans or add a plan separately to your Medicare Supplement or Original Medicare.
